Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease Causes and Treatments
Lumbar degenerative disc disease is the deterioration of the intervertebral discs in the lower back. With this condition, the discs lose their flexibility, breaking apart and leaving the spine’s vertebrae to grind against each other.
While injury to a disc may lead to this condition, it is generally caused by aging. As we get older, the discs in our back lose water content and become more brittle, leaving them susceptible to deterioration. The discs in the lumbar region of the back are more at risk for this condition because that portion of the spine must support a lot of the body’s weight. Additionally, that section of the back also facilitates bending and twisting, so the discs, vertebrae, ligaments and other structures in this area experience a lot of wear and tear. When lumbar degenerative disc disease develops, it results in uncomfortable symptoms like pain, stiffness and swelling. If you’ve experienced these symptoms, a doctor may have suggested conservative treatments like stretching and ibuprofen. If these techniques haven’t worked though, you may want to consider a more aggressive treatment.
At Laser Spine Institute (LSI), we offer several that may be able to ease your pain. We use a highly effective endoscopic technique to access and treat a patient’s discs without causing excessive damage to the surrounding tissue. The result for the large majority of our patients is a drastic reduction in symptoms and a quick return to normal activities. More than 85% of our patients report an increased quality of life within three months of their LSI procedure, and some have even felt an improvement within hours of the treatment.
If you’d like to learn more about our treatment for lumbar degenerative disc, contact LSI today. We will review your CT scan or MRI at no charge.
