Physical Therapy

General Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a specific form of health care that provides an individual with services to help them develop and maintain movement or functionality in life.  A physical therapist provides the services to individuals that may be affected by aging, disease or injury.

The role of physical therapy is to identify and help an individual maximize their quality of life and movement through prevention, treatment or rehabilitation.  Physical therapy encompasses aspects of physical, emotional and social well being.

A physical therapist will be in contact and interact with any health related professionals involved with a patient’s case.  Depending on the severity of the problem, physical therapy can be performed by either a physical therapist or a physical therapists assistant under the guidance of the therapist.

To establish a plan of action a physical therapist will review their patient’s history and physical examination.  Occasionally a physical therapist will need to review results provided my imaging studies such as a MRI or CT scan.

Orthopedic Physical Therapy

In orthopedic physical therapy the therapist will diagnose, manage, and plan and help you with treatment for disorders or injuries to the musculoskeletal system, which may include rehab after open back surgery.  This physical therapy is usually performed through an outpatient clinic. Physical therapists that specialize in orthopedic care are trained in post-operative orthopedic procedures, fractures, acute sports injuries, arthritis, sprains, strains, back and neck pain, spinal conditions and amputations.

Orthopedic Physical Therapy Techniques

Orthopedic physical therapy will use techniques such as joint and spine mobilization or manipulation.  Therapeutic exercises, educating patients on healthy life styles, heat and cold application and electrical stimulation are other specific techniques that are performed to help with recovery.

Physical Therapy Education Standards

Depending on what country you are looking for physical therapy in, the standards will often vary considerably.  Some countries require no formal education, while others require either a masters or a doctoral degree.
