Sciatica Symptoms

Sciatica symptoms are the result of irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve, which runs out of the lumbar spine and into the buttocks, legs, and bottoms of the feet. These symptoms can vary slightly in the exact combination and intensity for each person, and they may get worse when the person coughs, laughs, sneezes, or sits or stands for long periods of time.

Sciatica symptoms include the following, all of which are felt in the areas of the body mentioned above:

  • Pain
  • Burning
  • Tingling or pins and needles
  • Numbness
  • Weakness
  • Cramping
  • Muscle spasms
  • More

Treatment of Sciatica Symptoms

The type of treatment prescribed for sciatica symptoms depends on the conditions causing the irritation of the sciatic nerve. However, most regimens begin with a combination of conservative techniques, and they may evolve to include or exclude certain other techniques depending on efficacy for the person's particular situation. These conservative techniques include:

  • Medicines including painkillers and anti-inflammatories
  • Spinal injections of cortisone
  • Stretching
  • Rest
  • Exercise
  • Alternating heat/ice packs
  • Physical therapy
  • Spinal decompression

In addition to conservative techniques, treatment for sciatica symptoms can include surgery. However, this is a procedure saved for only those patients who cannot alleviate their symptoms adequately and it results in a negative impact on their quality of life. Of the surgical options available, endoscopic procedures are preferred by many. The minimally invasive procedures offer a faster recovery time, fewer risks, and a higher success rate.

For more information on sciatica symptoms, or to discuss your treatment options with a spine doctor, contact Laser Spine Institute. We offer complimentary reviews of MRIs or CT scans and will be happy to have one of our doctors look over your chart and let you know if you're eligible for one of our endoscopic procedures, as well as discuss all your potential paths for relief.
