Due to the fact that sciatica - a collection of symptoms caused by compression of the sciatic nerve - can be caused by a number of conditions, there is no “standard” sciatica treatment, and each person must obtain his or hers individually from a doctor. However, there are a number of conservative treatments that are frequently included in these individualized treatment regimens, and these include:
- Spinal decompression
- Painkillers - OTC and prescription
- Hot/cold compression therapy
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Epidural cortisone injections
- Rest
- Exercise
- Stretching
- More
Surgical Sciatica Treatment
In addition to the conservative techniques listed above, surgery is also sometimes used as a sciatica treatment to correct or alleviate many of the causes behind the symptoms.
These causes include:
- Bulging disc
- Herniated disc
- Bone spur
- Spinal stenosis
- Degenerative disc disease
- Spinal arthritis
- More
When it comes to surgical sciatica treatment, there are two main choices: open back surgery and minimally invasive procedures. Endoscopic procedures offer a variety of advantages over open back surgery. Because it causes less trauma to the body, there is no need for general anesthesia, and the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia and IV sedation, eliminating the risks associated with general anesthesia. In addition, the smaller incision and reduced trauma to muscle means a lower risk of infection. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting, so there is no hospital stay as with open back surgery, and the recovery time is just a few weeks rather than six months or more. Plus, the success rate is much higher.
